Free Bet Terms Explained

A free bet is not cash, and the number in the banner is not the number that lands in your account. Under standard British free bet terms, the token is stake not returned: a £10 free bet at even money pays £10 profit, not £20, and the £10 token itself vanishes into the settled bet. That single mechanic is the most misunderstood part of the whole promotional business. Punters see "£30 in free bets" and mentally file it as £30. It is £30 of stake you cannot withdraw, which buys you the profit on £30 of risk and nothing more.

Free bets do not pay out the stake

So the arithmetic changes depending on price. A £10 token on a 4/1 winner returns £40, not £50. On a 1/2 shot, assuming the offer even permits it, you collect £5. The token's real value to you falls the shorter you go, which is precisely why bookmakers set a floor.

The qualifying bet and the price hurdle

Before the token appears, you usually have to place a qualifying bet with your own money. Football Ground Guide's offers page describes this as standard practice, and the Gambling Commission's guidance on withdrawing deposits and deposit winnings is clear that in Britain the qualifying stake is real money. People forget that when they are calculating the "value" of a sign-up deal.

Then there is the price condition. Back a 2/5 favourite with your qualifying stake and you may find no token arrives at all.

Expiry, withdrawal and the limits on bonus money

Tokens have a shelf life. Many offers run for seven days after the free bet is credited, per Football Ground Guide. Miss the window and the token lapses. On your own money, the position is stronger than most punters realise. The Gambling Commission says players must be allowed to withdraw their deposit balance at any time, even when a bonus is pending or active. Operators may impose wagering requirements on bonus winnings, but winnings made with your own funds must be withdrawable. If a site tells you your cash is locked because a promotion is live, that is worth a complaint.

The newer bonus rules from the Gambling Commission

On 26 March 2025 the Commission announced changes intended to make gambling promotions "safer and simpler". Two elements matter here. Gambling businesses would be banned from offering promotions requiring consumers to carry out two or more types of gambling, the sort of deal that makes you bet on football and then spin slots to release the money. And operators would be limited on how many times bonus funds must be re-staked before winnings from a bonus can be withdrawn.

Reading the promotion page before opting in

The banner is marketing. The promotion page and the operator's terms are the document that decides what you get. Four things to read before you opt in: the qualifying bet requirement and its stake, the minimum odds, the expiry window, and the payout exclusions, including the fact that the stake will not be returned. Those terms, not the headline figure, are the offer.
